NCMC Baseball Falls Just Short Of Regular Season Region 16 Title, Turns Attention To Region Tournament

North Central Missouri College salvaged a split on the road at Moberly Area Community College over the weekend, bouncing back from a pair of tough losses on Friday to dominate Saturday's doubleheader behind timely hitting and key performances up and down the lineup.

The Pirates dropped the opener 5-2 despite a strong effort from Alejandro Somaza, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored, while Javier Suarez also drove in a run. Eduardo Chourio added a double as part of NCMC's seven-hit effort. In game two, the Pirates were held scoreless in a 2-0 defeat, collecting five hits with Suarez, Chourio, Leonel Dominguez, Koby Wagers, and Jose Bedoya each recording one. Luis Leon turned in a quality start on the mound, allowing just one earned run over 6.2 innings while striking out nine.

NCMC responded in a big way on Saturday, beginning with a gritty 6-5 comeback win in game three. Ismael Medina powered the offense, going 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBIs, while Eduardo Chourio and Koby Wagers each drove in runs to support the late push. Hagen McMahon earned the win in relief, and Chourio closed the door for his seventh save of the season. The Pirates then erupted offensively in the series finale, rolling to a 15-4 victory behind a 17-hit attack. Alejandro Somaza led the charge with a 4-for-4 performance and four RBIs, while JP Gonzalez and Wagers each homered and combined for five RBIs. Medina and Chourio continued their strong weekends with multi-hit efforts, and Javier Suarez added two hits and an RBI. On the mound, Amaury Cienfuegos picked up the win, with Jorge Jimenez delivering 2.1 scoreless innings in relief to secure the series split for the Pirates.

The games concluded the regular season for the Pirates who will now turn their attention to the NJCAA DII Region 16 Tournament.  That event will be played at East Central College from May 7-9.  The winner of the tournament will move on to the Central District, an event that the Pirates were runners up in last year.

NCMC will be the #2 seed in the tournament after finishing tied with Moberly Area CC atop the final league standings.  MACC holds the tiebreaker due to their 5-3 head-to-head record with the Pirates.
