Region 16 Champs! NCMC Men’s Golf Team Qualifies for NJCAA Division II National Tournament for First Time in Program History

The NCMC Men's Golf team traveled to Bogey Creek Golf Course in Farmington, MO this week to compete in the NJCAA South Central District Championship hosted by Mineral Area College and Region 16 Tournament. The top two finishing teams advanced to the National Tournament out of the 9-team South Central District. The Pirates made history and became the first team in program history to advance to the NJCAA Division II National Tournament finishing in 2nd place behind Murray State College and claimed the NJCAA Region 16 title for the first time since 2019.  

 

NCMC got off to a fast start and had the lead after Day One firing a team score of 299. In Round One, Kaleb Groomer fired an even par round of 72. Alvaro Alegria posted a 74 including an eagle on the Par 5 15th hole. Dylan Groomer was right behind with a 76 while Guillermo Gomez and Jorge Gomez shot round one scores of 77 and 78 respectively. The tournament field got two holes into Round Two before severe thunderstorms and rain caused a weather delay for the rest of Tuesday. Wednesday saw the NCMC Men play 34 holes to close out their second and third round of the event with team scores of 303-309 for a 36-hole total of 911, finishing three strokes ahead of #19 Jackson College (TX) and host Mineral Area College. Kaleb Groomer continued his solid play through the event with rounds of 73-74 for a 36-hole score of 219. Groomer finished Runner Up in the South Central and earned 1st team All-Region honors. Groomer also collected eight birdies at the tournament, was 1st in Par 3 scoring average (Even Par) and 1st in Par 5 scoring average (-3). Alvaro Alegria on Wednesday shot rounds of 74-82 to get to his 54-hole total of 230 and earned 2nd team All-Region honors.  

 

Jorge Gomez stayed consistent shooting rounds of 77-78 for a 36-hole total of 233. Gomez recorded 25 pars and a birdie during Day two. 

 

 Dylan Groomer was right behind shooting matching rounds of 79 on Wednesday for his 36-hole total of 234. Groomer collected 22 Pars and a Birdie during his second and third rounds. 

 

Guillermo Gomez rounded out the team, posting an 80 in Round Two with back-to-back birdies on Holes #14 & #15 on the course. In Round Three, Gomez shot a round of 78 including 8 Pars and 2 Birdies. 

 

As a team, the Pirate golfers collected 24 birdies at the event and led the tournament field in Par 3 scoring average (3.28).  

 

The NCMC Men will now prepare and hope to continue their postseason success when they head to the NJCAA Division II National Tournament at The Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Indiana. The National Championship days are set for May 19th-22nd.
